Tinea pedis, commonly known as athlete's foot, is a dermatophyte infection that occurs on the soles of the feet and between the toes. It can sometimes spread to the heels and dorsum of the feet, but those that only occur on the dorsum of the feet are called tinea corporis. It is similar to what Chinese medicine calls stinking snails and snail blisters, such as "Medical Mirror: Surgical Secrets": "Stinking snail blisters are the most lingering, with itchy white spots on the feet and toes, rubbing the skin to break and rotting, and smelly water..."; "Snail blisters are formed on the soles of the feet, and are caused by internal dampness and external cold. The bean-sized yellow blisters are stuffy, swollen and hard, and the body fluids are broken and smelly, swollen, rotten and painful." Chinese medicine believes that this disease is caused by damp heat or long-term exposure to poisons in wetlands.
