Calcium Chloride Injection

Function and Efficacy

This product is a calcium supplement. Calcium ions can maintain normal excitability of nerves and muscles and promote the secretion of acetylcholine by nerve endings. When serum calcium is low, the excitability of nerves and muscles may increase, resulting in convulsions. When blood calcium is too high, the excitability may decrease, resulting in weakness. Calcium ions can improve the permeability of cell membranes, increase the density of capillaries, reduce exudation, and have an anti-allergic effect. Calcium ions can promote the calcification of bones and teeth. There is a competitive antagonism between high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions, which can be used to rescue magnesium poisoning; calcium ions can react with fluoride to form insoluble calcium fluoride, which can be used to rescue fluoride poisoning.

Appearance

This product is a colorless clear liquid.

Indication

1. Treatment of calcium deficiency, acute hypocalcemia, alkalosis, tetany caused by hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, etc.; 2. Allergic diseases; 3. Rescue of magnesium poisoning; 4. Rescue of fluoride poisoning; 5. Application in cardiac resuscitation, such as rescue of abnormal cardiac function caused by hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia, or calcium channel blockade.

Usage and Dosage

1 For hypocalcemia or electrolyte supplementation, 0.5-1g (136mg-273mg elemental calcium) is diluted once and slowly injected intravenously (no more than 0.5ml per minute, i.e. 13.6mg calcium). The dose is repeated every 1-3 days according to the patient's condition and blood calcium concentration. 2 For hypocalcemia in patients with "hungry bone syndrome" after hyperparathyroidism surgery, this product can be diluted in normal saline or dextran and dripped 0.5-1mg per minute (maximum 2mg per minute). 3 When used as a cardiotonic, the dosage is 0.5-1g, diluted and dripped intravenously, no more than 1ml per minute; intraventricular injection, 0.2-0.8g (54.4-217.6mg calcium), single dose.

Adverse Reactions

Intravenous injection may cause systemic fever, and too fast an intravenous injection may cause nausea, vomiting, arrhythmia, and even cardiac arrest. Hypercalcemia may manifest in the early stages as constipation, lethargy, persistent headache, loss of appetite, metallic taste in the mouth, and abnormal dry mouth, while late-stage symptoms may include mental confusion, high blood pressure, light sensitivity of the eyes and skin, nausea, vomiting, arrhythmia, and so on.

Precautions

1. Calcium chloride is highly irritating and should not be injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. If it leaks out of the blood vessels during intravenous injection, it may cause tissue necrosis. Generally, this product is not used in children. 2. Interference with diagnosis. It may increase serum amylase and serum hydroxycortisol concentration. Long-term or large-scale use of this product will reduce serum phosphate concentration. 3. It is forbidden to inject this product intravenously during the use of cardiac glycosides. 4. It should not be used in patients with renal insufficiency, hypocalcemia and respiratory acidosis.

Drug Interactions

1. When used with estrogen, it can increase the absorption of calcium. 2. When used with thiazide diuretics, it can increase the renal reabsorption of calcium and cause hypercalcemia.
