Function and Efficacy

This product is a second-generation sulfonylurea oral hypoglycemic drug. The main mechanism of its hypoglycemic effect is to stimulate pancreatic b cells to secrete insulin and partially increase the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin. The speed of binding and dissociation of this product with insulin receptors is faster than that of glibenclamide, and it is less likely to cause severe hypoglycemia.

Indication

Used for type 2 diabetes mellitus in which diet, physical exercise and weight loss cannot satisfactorily control blood sugar.

Usage and Dosage

Initial dose and dose adjustment: The initial dose is 1 mg, once a day. If necessary, the daily dose can be increased. It is recommended to increase the dose as appropriate based on blood sugar monitoring results.

Adverse Reactions

1. Hypoglycemia. This product can cause hypoglycemia, especially in the early stage of treatment for the elderly and weak patients, those who eat irregularly, drink alcohol, and those with liver and kidney damage. According to reports, the incidence rate is 2%. 2. Digestive system symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are rare. 3. There are individual cases reported that serum liver transaminases are elevated. 4. Skin allergic reactions, itching, erythema, and urticaria are rare. 5. Others: headache, fatigue, and dizziness are rare.

Precautions

1. Patients with known allergic history to glimepiride are contraindicated. 2. Patients with diabetic ketoacidosis with or without coma are contraindicated. In this case, insulin should be used for treatment. 3. Pregnant women, women in labor, and breastfeeding women are contraindicated.

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: There is no research data on the safety and effectiveness of this product for children. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: 1. Pregnancy: Glimepiride tablets are contraindicated during pregnancy. Pregnant patients should switch to insulin. Patients planning to become pregnant should notify their doctors. 2. Lactation: Sulfonylurea derivatives, such as glimepiride, can be excreted from breast milk and are contraindicated for lactating women. Precautions for the elderly: No special instructions, or follow the doctor's advice.

Drug Interactions

1. The effect of this product can be enhanced when used in combination with salicylates, sulfonamides, phenylbutazone, anti-tuberculosis drugs, tetracyclines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, beta-receptor blockers, chloramphenicol, coumarins and cyclophosphamide. 2. Chlorpromazine, sympathomimetic drugs, corticosteroids, thyroid hormones, oral contraceptives and niacin preparations can reduce the hypoglycemic effect of this product. 3. This product can reduce the patient's tolerance to alcohol, and alcohol may also enhance the hypoglycemic effect of the drug.
