Acyclovir eye ointment
Function and Efficacy
Acyclovir (AZV) is effective against herpes simplex virus (HSV) type I and II, and secondarily against varicella-zoster virus (AZV), but has a weaker effect on Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus. Acyclovir is effective against herpes simplex virus type I and II and varicella-zoster virus because AZV can be phosphorylated by virus-encoded thymidine kinase (TK) to acyclovir monophosphate, which is then catalyzed by cellular enzymes to form acyclovir diphosphate and triphosphate. Acyclovir triphosphate is a strong inhibitor of herpes simplex virus DNA polymerase. As a substrate of viral DNA polymerase, it binds to the enzyme and is incorporated into viral DNA, thereby terminating the synthesis of viral DNA. About 5% to 25% of patients experience temporary renal dysfunction, manifested as elevated serum creatinine. Other toxic reactions are rare and can sometimes cause central nervous system symptoms, such as lethargy, coma, mental confusion, hallucinations, agitation, tremors, and epilepsy-like symptoms.
