Turksterone is extracted from the plant Ajuga ciliata Bunge. Ajuga ciliata Bunge is a perennial herb belonging to the family Lamiaceae and the genus Ajuga ciliata. The whole plant of Ajuga sinensis is used as medicine to treat lung heat hemoptysis, bruises, tonsillitis, pharyngitis and other diseases.
Turkesterone is an ecdysteroid, which is a hormonal steroid that is found in plants. Ecdysteroids can be compared due to their ability to induce growth. However, ecdysteroids do not bind to androgen receptors, and therefore do not cause any steroidal side effects ( 1 ), such as gynecomastia and hair loss.
