Production methods: clindamycin is a derivative of lincomycin, lincomycin 7 on the hydroxyl group replaced by chlorine atoms after the semi-synthetic antibiotics.
Antibiotics treat bacterial infections by preventing bacteria from growing. Clindamycin HCl works most effectively to stop infections caused by anaerobic bacteria--bacteria that do not need oxygen to survive--such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptopcoccus pneumonia. Clindamycin inhibits the manufacture of protein by the bacteria, disabling their ability to replicate. Any bacteria remaining quickly die out, and no new bacteria are able to survive in the presence of clindamycin, which effectively stops the infection being treated .
Clindamycin is an antibiotic useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections.This includes middle ear infections, bone or joint infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, strep throat, pneumonia, and endocarditis among others.It can be useful against some cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).It may also be used for acne and in addition to quinine for malaria. It is available by mouth, intravenously, and as a cream to be applied to the skin or in the vagina .
Although similar in structure, antibacterial spectrum, and mechanism of action to macrolides, lincomycin is also effective against other organisms including actinomycetes, mycoplasma, and some species of Plasmodium. Intramuscular administration of a single dose of 600 mg of Lincomycin produces average peak serum levels of 11.6 micrograms/ml at 60 minutes, and maintains therapeutic levels for 17 to 20 hours, for most susceptible gram-positive organisms. Urinary excretion after this dose ranges from 1.8 to 24.8 percent (mean: 17.3 percent) .
A two-hour intravenous infusion of 600 mg of Lincomycin achieves average peak serum levels of 15.9 micrograms/ml and yields therapeutic levels for 14 hours for most susceptible gram-positive organisms. Urinary excretion ranges from 4.9 to 30.3 percent (mean: 13.8 percent).
