LCZ696 is a dual-effect angiotensin receptor enkephalase inhibitor with a unique mode of action, which is believed to reduce the strain of failing heart. LCZ696 can enhance the body's natural defense against heart failure, increase the level of natriuretic peptides and other endogenous vasoactive peptides, and inhibit the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). LCZ696 combines novartis's hypertension drug Diovan (generic name: valsartan) with the experimental drug AHU-377. AHU377 blocks the action of two peptides that threaten to lower blood pressure, while Diovan improves vasodilation and stimulates the body to excrete sodium and water.
