A fluorescent dyd and topical antiseptic agent, it is used (usually as the hydrochloride salt) in eye drops for the treatment of superficial eye infections. It has a role as an antiinfective agent, an antiseptic drug, a fluorescent dye, a MALDI matrix material, an acid-base indicator and a mutagen. It is a member of aminoacridines and a primary amino compound. It is a conjugate base of a 9-aminoacridine(1+).|A highly fluorescent anti-infective dye used clinically as a topical antiseptic and experimentally as a mutagen, due to its interaction with DNA.
