Introduction

Taurine occurs as colorless or white crystals, or a white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water, and practically insoluble in ethanol (99.5%). The pH of a solution prepared by dissolving 1.0g of Taurine in 20mL of freshly boiled and cooled water is between 4.1 and 5.6.

In order to ensure the healthy growth of infants and young children, the United States, Japan and other countries have clearly stipulated that the content of taurine in infant dairy products should not be less than 0.16mg/100mL. It can be used as a nutritional fortifier in food and beverages for pilots, astronauts, athletes, etc. to enhance physical fitness and relieve fatigue.

Taurine is added to animal feed as a feed additive, which can prevent and treat fish diseases and brighten the eyes of pets such as cats and dogs.

It has a role as a human metabolite, an antioxidant, a mouse metabolite, a Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolite, an Escherichia coli metabolite, a glycine receptor agonist, a nutrient and a radical scavenger. It is a conjugate acid of a 2-aminoethanesulfonate.
