Explosive limit:May explode in moist air
Odor:Pungent, suffocating odor
Experimental Properties:Forms dense white fumes in moist air; ... reacts with incandescence when heated with alkali metals or alkaline earth metals except magnesium|Easily forms coordination complexes with molecules having at least one unshared pair of electrons; forms solid complex with nitric acid (HNO3.2BF3); polymerizes unsaturated molecules|Gaseous or liquid boron trifluoride does not react with mercury or chromium, even at high pressures for long periods.|Critical volume: 115 cu cm/mol|For more Other Experimental Properties (Complete) data for BORON TRIFLUORIDE (6 total), please visit the HSDB record page.
Air and Water Reactions:Fumes in air. Soluble in water and slowly hydrolyzed by cold water to give hydrofluoric acid. Reacts more rapidly with hot water.
Reactive Group:Fluoride Salts, Soluble
Reactivity Alerts:Known Catalytic Activity
Reactivity Profile:BORON TRIFLUORIDE is a colorless, strongly irritating, toxic gas. Upon contact with water, steam or when heated to decomposition, it will produce toxic fluoride fumes. Incompatible with alkyl nitrates, calcium oxide. Reaction with alkali metals or alkaline earth metals (except magnesium) will cause incandescence [Bretherick, 5th ed., 1995, p. 65].
Ionization Potential:15.50 eV
Flammable Limits:Nonflammable Gas
Physical Dangers:The gas is heavier than air.
Corrosivity:Boron trifluoride will attack some forms of plastics, rubber, and coatings
Heat of Vaporization:19.33 kJ/mol at -101 °C
Critical Temperature & Pressure:Critical temperature: 260.8 K (-12.35 °C); critical pressure: 4.98 MPa (3.74X10+4 mm Hg)
