Long-nosed Pit Viper is the dried body of Agkistrodon acutus(Fam. Viperidae).The drug is collected in summer or autumn,opened in the abdomen, removed from the viscera, washed clean, held open with bamboo piece, coiled up in disc-shape.The bamboo piece is removed after being dried.
In coiled up disc, 17-34 cm in diameter, the body up to 2 m long. The head, located in the centre of the disc,slightly raised upward, triangular and flattened, tip of the snout upward, commonly known as “Qiaobitou (up-ward nose) ”. Upper jaw with tubular fangs, sharp and hollow. Each side of the dorsum bearing 17-25 V-shaped stripe patterns alternated blackish-brown with light brown, both upper ends of the “V”stripe patterns contacted at the mid-dorsal line and forming a square stripe pattern, commonly known as“Fangshengwen”. Some of the“ v”stripe patterns not exactly contacted with those on the other side,and arranged alternatively. The abdomen opened or not, grevish-white.Scales relatively large, with black subrounded spots, commonly known as " Lianzhuban ( a patch like a string of beads ) ”. The inner wall of the abdomen yellowish-white, the spinous process of the vertebrae relatively high, projected upward in shape of a blade, anterior and posterior hypapophysis similar in shape, mostly falcate, inclined posteriorly, tip obviously beyond the convex hind surface of the centrum.The tail tapered abruptly, with one dark grey triangular horny scale at the end.Odour,stinking; taste, slightly salty.
