DESCIPTION:
Calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as quicklime or burnt lime, is a widely used chemical compound. It is a white, caustic, alkaline, crystalline solid at room temperature. The broadly used term lime connotes calcium-containing inorganic materials, in which carbonates, oxides and hydroxides of calcium, silicon, magnesium, aluminium, and iron predominate. By contrast, quicklime specifically applies to the single chemical compound calcium oxide.
The main component of quicklime is CaO, which is generally in the form of a block, pure white, and pale gray or yellowish when it contains impurities. Quicklime absorbs moisture or adds water to become hydrated lime. Slaked lime is also called slaked lime. Its main component is Ca(OH)2.

APPLICATION/USAGE:
Quicklime is a commonly used desiccant for removing water vapor by chemical absorption. It is also used for dehydration of steel, pesticides, medicines, desiccants, tanning and alcohols. It is especially suitable for products such as puffed food, mushrooms, fungus, etc., as well as products in instrumentation, medicine, clothing, electronic telecommunications, leather, textile and other industries. Lime and limestone are used extensively as building materials and are important raw materials for many industries. Limestone can be directly processed into stone and fired into quicklime.

Crumbles on exposure to moist air|Commercial grade is usually yellowish or brownish tint, due to iron|Readily absorbs CO2 and H2O from air, becoming air-slaked.|A powerful caustic to living tissue. The powdered oxide may react explosively with water.

Air and Water Reactions:

Crumbles on exposure to moist air. Reacts with water to form corrosive calcium hydroxide, with evolution of much heat. Temperatures as high as 800° C have been reached with addition of water (moisture in air or soil). The heat of this reaction has caused ignition of neighboring quantities of sulfur, gunpowder, wood, and straw [Mellor 3: 673 1946-47].

A base and an oxidizing agent. Neutralizes acids with generation of heat. Nonflammable, but will support combustion by liberation of oxygen, especially in the presence of organic materials.
