    What is Enzymatically Modified Isoquercetin(EMIQ)                                                            

    Enzymatically modified isoquercitrin (EMIQ) is produced from rutin using enzymatic hydrolysis followed by treatment with glycosyltransferase in the presence of dextrin to add glucose residues. EMIQ is absorbed in the same way as quercetin, a powerful antioxidant reported to prevent disused muscle atrophy by targeting mitochondria and to have ergogenic effects. The present study investigated the effect of EMIQ on skeletal muscle hypertrophy induced by functional overload.

    Difference between quercetin and isoquercetin  ?                                                         

    Quercetin is a flavonol found in a wide variety of vegetables and herbs and contains many beneficial bioactivities that aid in healthy cell proliferation and cardiovascular immunity.

    Quercetin possesses antioxidant properties that scavenge free radicals, aid in cellular regulation, promote DNA integrity, and more. Additionally, quercetin helps the body maintain adequate glutathione levels during oxidative stress, supporting immune regulation.

    Quercetin is the base structure for many flavonoids, such as rutin, and isoquercitrin. Also, the quercetin ring structure exists as part of larger flavonoid molecules, such as hypericin in goldenrod and flavonoid glycosides in ginkgo. Because it is relatively easy to extract from rutin, quercetin is often added to supplements. However, quercetin is rarely found directly in nature and is not easily and actively absorbed from the absorptive surface of the small intestine. Its absorption occurs in the slower, less efficient process of passive diffusion.

     

    Quercetin exists in nature mainly as a glucoside, usually in the 3' or 4' position of the glucoside chain. Apples and onions are one of the richest food sources of quercetin glucosides, especially quercetin-3-glucoside, isoquercitrin, and isoquercitrin.

     

    Isoquercitrin and isoquercitrin are two terms that can be used interchangeably, even in the eyes of experts, because their molecules are structurally very similar.

     

    Functionally, the two molecules are virtually indistinguishable. Studies have shown that isoquercitrin is more bioavailable than quercetin or quercetin (rutin).

    Comparison of the properties of quercetin and isoquercetin, with three differences

    1.Chemical structure

    From Chemically, isoquercitrin is a glycoside, while quercetin is a glycogen, commonly known as a sugar ligand. From Figures 1 and 2 above, quercetin and isoquercetin have the same skeleton. In terms of chemical synthesis, isoquercitrin is a glucose added to the skeleton.

    The extraction process of Shaanxi Chuanghe Biotechnology is as follows: extract rutin from high quality acacia rice, and then desugarise rutin, desugarise one sugar (rhamnose) to form isoquercitrin, desugarise two sugars (glucose + rhamnose) to form quercetin.

    2.Water solubility

    In terms of water solubility, quercetin is completely insoluble in water while isoquercetin is soluble in water.

    3.Bioavailability

    Isoquercitrin, has been shown to have higher bioavailability and faster absorption than quercetin or quercetin (rutin), which is about twice as fast as quercetin and ten times faster than quercetin (rutin). The glucose fraction of isoquercitrin accelerates the uptake of the molecule and its conversion to quercetin.

    Enzymes and active transport mechanisms of cells in the small intestine interact with the glucose component of the isoquercitrin molecule, accelerating their uptake and conversion to quercetin. Without the glucose component, quercetin uptake in the small intestine would be accomplished by a slower and less efficient passive diffusion process. Thus, isoquercitrin is a more bioavailable form of quercetin. Comparison of the bioavailability of quercetin, isoquercetin was obtained in animal research models: 2% for quercetin and 12% for isoquercetin (see table below).
