Vitamin D2, chemically known as Ergocalciferol, is an open-ring steroid formed by the break of chemical bonds of steroids under photochemical action, especially by ultraviolet light and ergosterol. The early preparation of ergocalciferol is also known as Viosterol. According to the 2011 US diagnostic guidelines, ergocalciferol may be used as a dietary supplement to supplement vitamin D. Ergocalciferol is just as effective as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is produced by the skin in response to UV exposure. Ergocalciferol is sold under a variety of names. Vitamin D2 is absorbed by the small intestine, and its absorption requires bile salts to bind to a special alpha-globulin, which is then transported to other parts of the body and stored in the liver and fat. Metabolism and activation go first through the liver, then the kidney. The initial time of action is 12 to 24 hours, and the therapeutic effect takes 10 to 14 days.
