Acrylic acid

Acrylic acid is an unsaturated carboxylic acid. It can react with carboxylic acids as a vinyl compound. It readily undergoes polymerisation and addition reactions. It can be used as a carboxylic acid to produce acrylates, acrylamides, N-substituted acrylamides and acryloyl chloride by common methods. Copolymers can be produced with acrylates, methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleates, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene and ethylene.

Acrylic acid homopolymers and copolymers containing predominantly acrylic acid have a glassy consistency and are usually soluble in water. They can be used in the form of free acids, ammonium salts and alkali salts for many different applications such as thickeners, dispersants, flocculants, protective colloids for stabilising emulsions and polymer dispersions, wetting agents, coatings and textile finishing agents.

Acrylic acid readily undergoes addition reactions with a variety of organic and inorganic compounds. It is therefore a very useful raw material for the production of many low molecular compounds. For example, acrylic acid can be used with water, alcohols, amines, halogens and chlorinated hydrocarbons to form propionic acid derivatives. It can also be used with other substances to produce unsaturated fatty acids, heterocyclic compounds and Diels-Alder addition products.
