Glycogen is a polysaccharide composed of chains of alpha-glucan molecules. It is a colorless crystalline powder, soluble in water and gelatinous, but insoluble in alcohols and most organic solvents.

Glycogen plays an important role in energy storage and supply in living organisms. It is mainly found in animals, especially in high levels in the liver and muscles. When energy is needed, the body breaks down glycogen into glucose molecules to supply the body's energy needs. Glycogen is also used as a medical supplement for people with diabetes to regulate blood sugar levels.
