Carbetocin is a synthetic, long-acting oxytocin 8-peptide analog with agonist properties that has clinical and pharmacological properties similar to naturally occurring oxytocin. Like oxytocin, carbetocin binds to the progesterone receptor of uterine smooth muscle, causing rhythmic contractions of the uterus, increasing its frequency and increasing uterine tone based on the original contractions. In the non-pregnant state, the uterine oxytocin receptor content is very low, increases during pregnancy, and reaches a peak during delivery. Therefore, carbetocin has no effect on the non-pregnant uterus, but it has an effective uterine contraction effect on the pregnant uterus and the newly delivered uterus.
