    Chloroauric acid is also called "gold chloride" and "gold chloride tetrahydrate". Chemical formula HAuCl4·4H2O. Molecular weight 411.85. Yellow needle-shaped crystals. Toxic and corrosive. Easily soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and slightly soluble in chloroform. Anhydrous chloroauric acid can be crystallized from ethanol solution. Decomposed by heat. Black spots are generated when exposed to light, and decomposed into gold trichloride when heated to 120°C. Brown gold can be precipitated by reaction with KI in alkaline solution. "Cinnamon purple" is generated when it meets tin dichloride in acidic solution. Methyl orange is used to make its aqueous solution purple, 1 to 3 drops of hydrochloric acid make it green, and it becomes lavender when it meets gold salt solution; adding cold potassium hydroxide solution generates gold hydroxide precipitation, and passing sulfur dioxide will reduce it to gold powder. Preparation method: dissolve pure gold in aqua regia (or hydrochloric acid saturated with chlorine) and distill and crystallize it. Uses: Chloroauric acid is mainly used for trace analysis, alkaloid determination, electroplating and photography, gold powder making, porcelain coloring, red glass manufacturing, special ink and drugs for treating tuberculosis. It can also be used as an analytical reagent and trace analysis of rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs).
