What is D-Xylose/ Xylose ?

Xylose is a component of xylan, which is widely found in plants. Xylose is also present in animal heparin, chondroitin and glycoproteins. It is the connecting unit of sugar chains and serine (or threonine) in certain glycoproteins. Xylose in a free state has not been found in nature so far.

Xylose is a pentose sugar. Natural D-xylose exists in plants in the form of polysaccharides. Because they are particularly abundant in waste parts of agricultural products (such as corn cobs, straws, and boll husks), there has been great interest in their utilization since ancient times.

Some bacteria can use D-xylose as a carbon source, and attempts have been made to use it as a component of the fermentation medium. The absorption rate from the wall of the intestine is much slower than that of D-glucose. Biosynthesis from glucose through D-glucose-6-phosphate→α-D glucose-1-phosphate→UDP-D-glucose→UDP-D-glucuronic acid→UDP-D-xylose , And then use this sugar nucleotide as a substrate to transfer xylose residues into polysaccharides. In animal proteoglycans, D-xylose and the serine residues of the polypeptide chain are connected by glycosidic bonds to form a bridging structure between the polysaccharide side chain and the protein. It is white crystal or crystalline powder, easily soluble in water.
