What's S-Carboxymethyl-L-Cysteine?

Carbocisteine (INN), also called carbocysteine (USAN), is a mucolytic that reduces the viscosity of sputum and so can be used to help relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and bronchiectasis by allowing the sufferer to bring up sputum more easily. Carbocisteine should not be used with antitussives (cough suppressants) or medicines that dry up bronchial secretions.
Carbocisteine is produced by alkylation of cysteine with chloroacetic acid.

It is a L-cysteine thioether and a non-proteinogenic L-alpha-amino acid. It is a conjugate acid of a S-carboxylatomethyl-L-cysteine(1-).|Carbocisteine is a mucolytic that reduces the viscosity of sputum to relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and bronchiectasis through easier expulsion of mucus. Carbocisteine should not be used with antitussives (cough suppressants) or medicines that dry up bronchial secretions as they are functional antagonists. Carbocisteine is produced by alkylation of cysteine with chloroacetic acid.|A compound formed when iodoacetic acid reacts with sulfhydryl groups in proteins. It has been used as an anti-infective nasal spray with mucolytic and expectorant action.
