    Polyacrylamide is a synthetic polymer that works as a film-former and suspending/binding agent in skin care formulas. Other reported uses include foam-building agent and lubricant/emollient. This ingredient can be found in all kinds of beauty products including shampoos, cleansers, body lotions, and self-tanning products. Polyacrylamide is available in different forms such as a solid (powder or microbeads), aqueous solution, or what’s known as an inverse emulsion (polyacrylamide in water droplets coated with surfactant molecules and suspended in mineral oil).

    Polyacrylamide, abbreviated as PAM, commonly known as flocculant or coagulant, is known as the third coagulant. Its molecular formula is+CH2-CHn. It is a linear polymer, divided into cationic (CPAM), anionic (HPAM), nonionic (NPAM), and zwitterionic types, with a molecular weight ranging from 4 to 20 million. The product has a white or slightly yellow powder appearance, a colorless viscous colloid in liquid form, and is easily soluble in water. It decomposes easily when the temperature exceeds 120 ℃. Polyacrylamide is a water-soluble polymer that is insoluble in most organic solvents and has good flocculation properties, which can reduce the frictional resistance between liquids. Polyacrylamide and its derivatives can be used as effective flocculants, thickeners, paper enhancers, and drag reducing agents for liquids. They are widely used in industrial sectors such as water treatment, papermaking, petroleum, coal, mining and metallurgy, geology, light textile, and construction.

    Polyacrylamide is relatively stable to heat with its solid only being softened at 220~230 °C and its solution subjecting to significant degradation only at above 110 °C. Polyacrylamide is insoluble in benzene, toluene, xylene, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, but soluble in water. Polyacrylamide can react with alkaline with partial hydrolysis of polyacrylamide.
