  Introduction to Hydroxytyrosol
Hydroxytyrosol is an active ingredient in olives and acts as a highly active antioxidant in the human body. Antioxidants, biologically active molecules, exist in many plants, but their activity varies. Hydroxytyrosol is regarded as one of the most powerful antioxidants, and the market demand is increasing. Its oxygen free radical absorption capacity is about 4,500,000μmolTE/100g: 10 times that of green tea, and more than twice that of CoQ10 and quercetin. Professor Liu Jiankang, director of the Institute of Mitochondrial Biomedicine, College of Life Sciences, Xi'an Jiaotong University, collaborated with DSM Nutritional Products of Switzerland to systematically study the role of hydroxytyrosol, a polyphenol extract in olive oil, from the molecular biology level. The study showed that the substance promotes mitochondrial function by promoting mitochondrial synthesis. They found that olive oil extract hydroxytyrosol (hydroxytyrosol) can effectively protect retinal pigment epithelial cells from oxidative damage and mitochondrial dysfunction caused by acrolein, a toxic component of cigarettes. The main mechanism is that hydroxytyrosol can induce a phase II enzyme system with detoxification in cells. These results suggest that hydroxytyrosol may have a protective effect against smoking-induced retinal pigment epithelial cell degeneration, such as macular degeneration. This finding also supports the idea that a diet rich in olive oil will be beneficial for the treatment of diseases related to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as diabetes and obesity.
