Freezing point -100℃, boiling point 95-96℃, relative density 1.156 (20/4℃), refractive index 1.4388, flash point 4℃, can be miscible with organic solvents, slightly soluble in water. Flammable. Smells of chloroform. It has certain toxicity, high concentration of anesthetic, can stimulate the eye mucosa, damage the liver and kidney. The oral lethal dose LD50 of rats was 1.19mL/kg, the inhaled lethal concentration of rats was 9260mg/m3, and the olfactory concentration in the air was 231mg/m3.
The flash point of dichloropropane is about 30℃, which is a medium flash point flammable liquid. Its vapor and air form an explosive mixture, which causes combustion and explosion in case of open fire and high heat energy. Can react strongly with oxidizing agents. It is subject to high thermal decomposition to produce toxic corrosive gases. Its vapor is heavier than air and can spread to a considerable distance at a lower level, leading to a return fire in the event of a fire source. In case of high heat, the pressure inside the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion.
1, 2-dichloropropane is a by-product of the mass production of epichlorohydrin. It is also an intermediate product in the production of tetrachloroethylene and other chlorine-containing organic compounds. It has been used as a smoking disinfectant, a chemical reaction intermediate, and as an industrial solvent in paint strippers or as a solvent to remove wood coating, but is no longer used in some applications.
