Sodium thiocyanate is a white orthorhombic crystal or powder. Relative density 1.735g/cm3. Melting point 287℃. It is easily deliquescent in the air and produces toxic gas when in contact with acid. It is easily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone and other solvents. The aqueous solution is neutral, and it produces blood-colored ferric thiocyanate with iron salts, does not react with ferrous salts, produces yellow sodium bisulfate with concentrated sulfuric acid, reacts with cobalt salts to produce dark blue cobalt thiocyanate, and reacts with silver salts or copper salts to produce white silver thiocyanate precipitate or black copper thiocyanate precipitate.

Application of sodium thiocyanate

It is used as a chemical analysis reagent, polyacrylonitrile fiber spinning solvent, color film developer, defoliant for some plants, etc.

In organic synthesis, it is used to convert halogenated hydrocarbons into corresponding thiocyanates. For example, isopropyl bromide reacts with sodium thiocyanate in a hot ethanol solution to obtain isopropyl thiocyanate. Similar reagents include ammonium thiocyanate and potassium thiocyanate.

Sodium thiocyanate is converted into isothiocyanate (S=C=NH) when it meets acid. After it is generated in situ, it can react with amines to form the corresponding thiourea derivatives.

It is used as a solvent for polyacrylonitrile fiber spinning, a chemical analysis reagent, a color film developer, a defoliant for some plants, and an airport road herbicide. It is also used in pharmaceuticals, printing and dyeing, rubber processing, black nickel plating, and the manufacture of artificial mustard oil.
