It is particularly effective against pathogens such as Mycoplasma, Pasteurella, and Haemophilus, which are common in respiratory infections in livestock . Tilmicosin phosphate is used in veterinary medicine primarily for treating respiratory diseases caused by bacteria like Mannheimia (formerly Pasteurella) haemolytica in cattle and sheep.

Tilmicosin phosphate is a macrolide antibiotic primarily used in veterinary medicine. It is effective against respiratory diseases in livestock, particularly in cattle and sheep. This compound is known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.

Mechanism of Action

Tilmicosin exerts its antibacterial effects by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, specifically at the peptidyl transferase center, disrupting the translocation step during protein synthesis. This action leads to a bacteriostatic effect at lower concentrations and a bactericidal effect at higher concentrations, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, as well as some Gram-negative bacteria like Pasteurella spp. and Mycoplasma spp.

Applications

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD): A significant health issue in cattle caused by pathogens such as Mannheimia haemolytica.
Ovine Respiratory Disease: Similar to BRD but affecting sheep.
It is also utilized in swine and poultry for respiratory infections.

Routes of Administration

Intramuscular (IM) injection: Rapid absorption with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1–2 hours.
Subcutaneous (SC) injection: Slower absorption but still effective.
