What is Carbocisteine/Loviscol ?

Carbocisteine is a respiratory mucolytic agent. Its action is similar to that of bromhexine in that it causes the disulfide bond of mucin in sputum to be cleaved, thereby reducing the viscosity of sputum and increasing the mucus fibres in sputum, lubricating the bronchial lining, increasing the secretion of low viscosity salivary mucin and reducing the production of high viscosity rockweed mucin, thereby reducing the viscosity of sputum and making it easier to cough up.
