Physical Properties: Under normal temperature and pressure, hexetidine is stable. It has a density of 0.889 g/cm³, a boiling point of 160°C at 0.4 mmHg, a flash point of 70°C, and a refractive index of 1.4649. Its vapor pressure is 3.11×10⁻⁶ mmHg at 25°C.

Applications

In Medicine:

Oral Hygiene: It is mainly used in oral care products like mouthwashes. For example, in the UK, it is the active ingredient in the medicated mouthwash Oraldene, which contains 0.1 g/100 ml of hexetidine. It can help prevent and treat various oral problems such as streptococcal pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, gingivitis, and oral thrush.

Vaginal Antisepsis: In Germany, hexetidine is used in vaginal suppositories like Vagi-Hex for vaginal antisepsis. It can also be used in late pregnancy to reduce neonatal infectious mortality and morbidity caused by group B streptococcal infections.

Other Fields: Hexetidine may also have potential applications in some industrial and scientific research fields, but its medical applications are more common.

Safety and Precautions

Hazards: Hexetidine can cause skin irritation, serious eye irritation, and may cause respiratory irritation.

First Aid Measures: In case of inhalation, move the victim to fresh air. If skin contact occurs, immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash with soap and plenty of water. In case of eye contact, rinse with pure water for at least 15 minutes. If ingested, rinse the mouth with water and do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
