Pharmacological Properties

Bone Density Increase: Elcatonin can bind to specific receptors in bone tissue, stimulate the activity of bone cells, promote the formation and mineralization of bone matrix, and thus increase bone density. This is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of skeletal diseases such as osteoporosis.

Bone Absorption Inhibition: It can inhibit osteoclast activity, reduce bone resorption, prevent bone calcium loss, and protect the integrity and stability of bones. In some pathological conditions like osteoporosis or poor fracture healing, Elcatonin can suppress excessive bone resorption where the rate of bone resorption exceeds that of new bone formation.

Central Analgesia: It can affect pain transmission pathways and pain receptors in the central nervous system, reduce the transmission and perception of pain signals, and thus relieve pain in patients. This is of great value in improving the quality of life of patients with skeletal diseases.

Clinical Applications

Indications: It is mainly used for the treatment of osteoporosis and the pain caused by osteoporosis.

Dosage and Administration: For adults with osteoporosis, it is usually injected intramuscularly at a dose of 10 units once a week. For those with pain caused by osteoporosis, 10 units should be injected intramuscularly twice a week. The dosage should be adjusted according to the symptoms.

Adverse Reactions

Major Adverse Reactions: May cause shock, anaphylactoid symptoms, tetany, asthma attacks, liver function damage, jaundice, etc.

Other Adverse Reactions: Include flushing, heat sensation, chest tightness, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, unsteadiness, headache, tinnitus, hypocalcemic tetany, hyponatremia, pain at the injection site, itching, sweating, numbness in the fingertips, etc.

Precautions

It is recommended to take Elcatonin before going to bed or administer antiemetics before taking the drug to reduce adverse reactions.

Elcatonin is a polypeptide preparation, which may cause shock. It should be used with caution in patients prone to allergic reactions such as rashes, erythema, and urticaria, patients with bronchial asthma or a history of it, and patients with abnormal liver function.

When performing intramuscular injection, avoid nerves and blood vessels. For repeated injections, alternate injection sites. The drug is generally used for 6 months and should not be used for a long time.
