    Neopentyl glycol More Info

    Synthesis Methods

Formate Method: Isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde undergo condensation in the presence of an alkali catalyst at 30 - 35°C and pH 9 - 11 to form hydroxypivalaldehyde. Then, it is reduced to neopentyl glycol in the presence of excess formaldehyde and strong alkali, while formaldehyde is oxidized and reacts with the alkali to form sodium formate.

Hydrogenation Method: It is synthesized by condensation of isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde to form hydroxypivalaldehyde, followed by hydrogenation and reduction.

    Applications

Resin Industry: Mainly used in the production of unsaturated polyesters and saturated polyesters for the preparation of powder coatings, polyurethane resins, glass fiber reinforced unsaturated resins, etc.

Coating Industry: Utilized in the production of oil-free alkyd resins, which are widely used in coatings, insulating materials, printing inks and other industries. Coatings made from NPG have excellent fluidity, flexibility, chemical stability, hydrolysis resistance, weather resistance, etc.

Polyurethane Field: Used to produce polyester polyols, which are mainly used in non-foam polyurethanes. Polyurethanes based on neopentyl glycol have excellent hydrolysis stability, low glass transition temperature, low melting point, and good heat and UV stability.

Plasticizer: It is used to synthesize plasticizers, which give PVC excellent low-temperature resistance, low volatility and migration resistance.

Lubricant: Neopentyl glycol diester resins are used in the production of high-grade synthetic lubricants, which have excellent thermal stability in addition to low pour point, high viscosity index and high flash point.

Solvent: It is an excellent solvent and can be used for the selective separation of aromatic and cycloalkyl hydrocarbons.

    Toxicity

It is of low toxicity. The oral LD₅₀ for rats is ≥6400 mg/kg, and for mice it is 3200 - 6400 mg/kg.
