Glycerin is also called glycerol, pure glycerin is a colorless, odorless, sweet viscous liquid. The boiling point is 290℃, the melting point is 17.9℃, and the relative density is 1.2613. Immiscible with water, anhydrous glycerol has strong water absorption. Glycerin is weakly acidic and can interact with alkaline hydroxides, such as copper hydroxide to produce bright blue copper glycerin (which can be used to identify polyols). Glycerin reacts with nitric acid to form glycerin trinitrate, also known as nitroglycerin, which is a high explosive. Because glycerin has water absorption, it is often used in cosmetics, leather, tobacco, food and textiles as moisture absorbent and moisturizer. Glycerin also moistens the intestine and can be used as an enema or as a suppository to treat constipation. Glyceryl nitrate has the effect of dilating coronary artery and can be used to treat angina pectoris. Nitroglycerin can be used as explosives and propellants. Glycerol reacts with dibasic acid to produce alkyd resin, which is widely used in paints and coatings. In nature, glycerol exists widely in the form of esters. If all kinds of animal and plant oils are glycerol carboxylic acid esters, fatty acids and glycerol can be obtained by hydrolyzing the oils. At present, one of the main sources of glycerin is the by-product of the soap industry (oil hydrolysis under alkaline conditions), and the other source is the preparation of propylene from petroleum cracking gas.
