Chloramphenicol, also known as chloramphenol, is a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptothrix chloride that has the effect of inhibiting bacterial growth, and natural chloramphenicol is a left-handed substance (also known as levomycin). The finished product is white or yellowish needle-like or flaky crystal, odorless, extremely bitter, slightly soluble in water, ether and chloroform, easily soluble in methanol, alcohol, acetone or ethyl acetate, insoluble in benzene and petroleum ether. It is more stable in neutral or weakly acidic aqueous solution and easy to fail in alkali. The resultant product is a racemate, also known as synmycin. Synmycin is a mixture of left - and right-handed chloramphenicol. Because dextrophine has no antibacterial effect, the efficacy of syncycin is only half that of natural products.
