Dissolve in methanol, ethanol, ether, chloroform, and alkali, and decompose in water. Application: Propionic anhydride is used as a propionylation agent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and special esters. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce Chemicals such as kanamycin propionate (an antibiotic), testosterone propionate (a male hormone deficiency), hydroxyandrosterone propionate (an anticancer drug), clomiphene citrate (an adrenal cortex hormone), and betamethasone dipropionate (an adrenal cortex hormone). It is also used as a dehydrating agent in organic synthesis for nitration and sulfonation reactions, and in the production of alkyd resins and dyes.
