Chemical structure: Icariin belongs to isopentenylated flavonoid glycosides with the molecular formula C33​H40​O15​ , molecular weight of about 676.66. Its structure contains a flavonoid backbone (3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one) with glucose attached via a glycosidic linkage to glucose, while bearing isopentenyl side chains (-CH₂-C(CH₃)=CH₂) at positions 6 and 8 of the flavonoid backbone. This structure confers a balance of lipid solubility and water solubility, contributing to transmembrane absorption and bioavailability.
Natural Sources: Mainly found in the above-ground parts (leaves, stems and branches) of Epimedium, but also distributed in small quantities in other plants of Berberidaceae or Rosaceae.
