Thymosin alpha 1 is a pharmaceutical peptide for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and enhancing immune system responsiveness.

Pharmacological Effects:

Thymosin alpha 1 (Tα1) is a polypeptide composed of 28 amino acids. It was first isolated in 1977 from Thymosin Fraction 5 (TF5) as a single peptide—thymosin α1, which exhibits 10 to 1000 times greater activity than TF5, with a molecular weight of 3.108 kDa. Thymosin α1 is a highly conserved acidic polypeptide primarily distributed in thymic tissue, particularly in thymic epithelial cells. It is also found in lymphoid tissues (such as the spleen and lymph nodes) and non-lymphoid tissues (such as the lungs, kidneys, and brain). Its secretion and release are not regulated by other hormones or releasing factors. Thymosin α1 is rapidly degraded and inactivated in vivo, with a very short half-life (<2 hours). Although its precise immunological mechanisms remain unclear, extensive experimental evidence confirms its potent immunomodulatory effects. It acts as a cellular immune enhancer and biological response modifier, playing a critical role in the body's immune response. 

Indications:

1. Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB):

   This product is indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in patients aged 18 years or older with compensated liver disease and evidence of hepatitis B virus replication (serum HBV-DNA positive). In patients who have been serum HBsAg-positive for at least 6 months and exhibit elevated ALT levels, studies have shown that treatment with this product can lead to virological response (loss of serum HBV-DNA) and normalization of ALT levels. In some responding patients, treatment may also result in the clearance of serum HBsAg. When used in combination with alpha-interferon, this product may increase response rates compared to monotherapy with either thymosin α1 or interferon alone. 

2.Vaccine Adjuvant for Immunocompromised Patients:

   For individuals with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chronic hemodialysis and elderly patients, this product enhances the immune response to viral vaccines, such as influenza or hepatitis B vaccines. In hemodialysis patients vaccinated against influenza, 65% of those treated with thymosin α1 as an adjuvant developed a fourfold or greater increase in anti-influenza antibody titers, compared to only 24% in the placebo group.
