Melatonin, also known as melatonin or melatonin, has the chemical name N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine. It is a substance found in animals, plants, fungi and bacteria.

Mechanism of Action

Even dim artificial light can significantly affect melatonin production, with stronger light having an even greater impact.

Melatonin deficiency is considered a likely contributor to the higher cancer rates among night-shift workers, and the modern habit of keeping lights on at night is also believed to be one of the reasons for the increasing cancer incidence in developed countries.

Indications

Melatonin can be used to aid sleep and treat sleep disorders. It can be administered orally, as well as through sprays or transdermal patches. In the United States and Canada, melatonin is available as an over-the-counter medication, while in mainland China, it is classified as a health supplement (such as the main ingredient in "Nao Bai Jin"). In Taiwan, it is an unapproved pharmaceutical product. In some other countries, melatonin may require a prescription or may not be available at all.

Preparation

Melatonin is naturally found in the pineal gland of mammalian brains. A standard extraction process involves the following steps: Bovine pineal glands are first freeze-dried and ground into a fine powder. The fat content is then removed using petroleum ether. The defatted powder is thoroughly mixed with deionized water to form a homogeneous slurry, which undergoes centrifugal separation. The resulting supernatant is collected and subjected to liquid-liquid extraction using an equal volume of ethyl acetate. The organic phase containing melatonin is then vacuum-dried to obtain a white crude melatonin product. Final purification is achieved through recrystallization to produce high-purity melatonin crystals.
