Nickel monoxide is an oxide of nickel with the chemical formula NiO, where nickel has an oxidation state of +2. Because the substance is a green powder under normal conditions, it is also called green nickel oxide to distinguish it from black nickel oxide, which is the main component of nickel trioxide. Nickel monoxide is widely used in the ceramic and glass industries to make semiconductor films and as a catalyst in the oxidation of organic compounds.

Nickel oxide has certain acidity and alkalinity. At high temperature, nickel oxide can decompose to produce nickel and oxygen. When heated to above 300ºC in air, it turns gray and turns into α-NiO, and when heated to 900ºC, it can turn into β-NiO. Nickel oxide is insoluble in water and liquid ammoni/a, but soluble in s ulfuric acid, nitric-acid, h ydrochloric-acid and ammoni/a. When heated to 400ºC in air, it is oxidized to nickel trioxide and reduced to nickel monoxide at 600ºC.
