Description	Oxytocin is a uterine contraction drug that can be extracted or chemically synthesized from the posterior pituitary gland of animals. The chemically synthesized product does not contain vasopressin and has no pressor effect. It has a selective excitatory effect on uterine smooth muscle and enhances its contraction.

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone and neuropeptide normally produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary.

Mechanism of action

The main target organ of oxytocin is the uterus, which promotes cervical maturation and induces and strengthens contractions by binding to oxytocin receptors. It binds to receptors on the muscle cell membrane, causing a decrease in muscle cell action potential and allowing extracellular calcium ions to enter the cell, leading to excitation and contraction of uterine smooth muscle.

Side Effects

1. Oxytocin can cause strong contraction of uterine smooth muscle and umbilical cord placental blood vessels, leading to premature detachment of the fetus from the maternal placenta deep in the uterus. If the fetus cannot be delivered quickly at this time, it may die due to hypoxia. Intense uterine contractions cause a one-time rupture of all amniotic membranes and complete loss of amniotic fluid, leading to dryness in the birth canal and resulting in delayed delivery.
2. If the dosage is too high, the fetus will be excessively compressed in the uterus, the umbilical cord will break in the uterus, causing stillbirth, false death, and weak offspring; About 10% -30% of sows have stillbirths or lochia in their uterus, and their self-cleaning function is reduced.
3. Due to the significant increase in pain in sows after the use of oxytocin, it can cause trembling and even shock throughout the body of the parturient sows, making it difficult for them to recover their physical strength, appetite, lactation, and physical fitness after childbirth. It also affects breastfeeding and postpartum care.
4. The use of oxytocin causes the loss of colostrum, insufficient intake of colostrum in piglets, which can easily lead to yellow and white diarrhea, and a decrease in the survival rate of suckling piglets.
