    Product Details:

Sodium Sulphite is a multifunctional chemical manufactured by Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd - Sulphites division that is used in various industrial applications, It acts as an oxygen scavenger in boiler and drilling water systems, helping to prevent corrosion. In the rubber industry to stabilizes latex and serves as an anticoagulant, it also plays a vital role in pulp and paper manufacturing, acts as a reducing agent in the dyes and detergents industry. It also functions as a flotation aid in mineral processing, enhancing ore separation efficiency.

    Product Applications:

    1. Water treatment: In thermal desalination plants and steam boilers, water containing dissolved oxygen is circulated at high temperatures that accelerates metal corrosion, causing tube failure, scaling, and costly downtime in heat exchangers, brine heaters, and condensate systems. Sodium Sulphite (SS) acts as a fast and effective oxygen scavenger, by removing dissolved oxygen before it can react with metal surfaces.
    2. Leather treatment: Sodium Sulfite (SS) is added to the fat liquoring emulsion as a mild reducing agent in mild alkaline conditions and helps to prevent oxidation of unsaturated bonds in oils, scavenge dissolved oxygen and neutralize any residual oxidants.
    3. Pulp and Paper Industry: added to woodchips for softening and better delignification to improve the quality of paper.
    4. Rubber & Polymers: Functions as an antioxidant to prevent premature aging and degradation during processing and storage.
    5. Dyes & Pigments: Acts as a reducing agent and stabilizer during manufacturing to maintain color quality and prevent oxidation.
    6. Other applications include manufacturing of various chemicals & intermediates.

    Appearance:

Sodium sulfite is a white odorless powder. Density 2.633 g / cm3. Moderately toxic. Sinks in water and dissolves slowly. Also transported as a heptahydrate Na2SO3.7H2O.

    Density:

    2.63 g/cm3

    Melting Point:

    >500°C

    Boiling Point:

    Decomposes (NTP, 1992)

    Refractive Index:

    1.484

    Water Solubility:

    H2O: 23 g/100 mL (20 ºC)

    Storage Conditions:

Sodium sulfite should be stored in a well-closed container in a cool, dry, place. In solution, sodium sulfite is slowly oxidized to sulfate by dissolved oxygen; strong acids lead to formation of sulfurous acid/ sulfur dioxide. On heating, sodium sulfite decomposes liberating sulfur oxides.

    Vapor Pressure:

    Negligible (NTP, 1992)

    Toxicity:

    Non-toxic

    Odor:

    Odorless

    Taste:

    Saline, sulfurous taste

    PH:

    8,5-11,5 (anhydrous: 10 % solution; heptahydrate: 20 % solution)

    Experimental Properties:

Density: 1.539. MP: decomposes; loses 7 H2O at 150 °C /Sodium sulfite heptahydrate/|Efflorescent crystals. Unstable, oxidizing in air to sulfate. Soluble in 1.6 parts water, about 30 parts glycerol; sparingly soluble in alcohol. Aqueous solution is alkaline and dissolves sulfur; pH approximately 9 /Sodium sulfite heptahydrate/

    Air and Water Reactions:

Soluble in water. Reacts with hot water, steam or acids to produce corrosive material.

    Reactive Group:

    Sulfite and Thiosulfate Salts

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Strong Reducing Agent

    Reactivity Profile:

SODIUM SULFITE is a reducing agent, particularly under basic conditions. Reacts with oxidizing agents such as peroxides, epoxides, oxoacids. Emits toxic fumes of sodium oxide and oxides of sulfur if heated to decomposition [Lewis, 3rd ed., 1993, p. 1174].

    Autoignition Temperature:

    Not flammable (USCG, 1999)
