Physical and Chemical Properties

Cumene is a colorless, flammable liquid with a characteristic aromatic odor under normal temperature and pressure. It is slightly soluble in water (solubility < 0.1 g/100 mL at 20℃) but highly soluble in common organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, benzene, toluene, and petroleum ether. It has excellent chemical stability under ambient conditions, with a boiling point of 152-154℃, a melting point of -96.0℃, a relative density (20/4 ℃) of 0.861-0.865, and a refractive index (n20/D) of 1.491-1.493. It is a volatile liquid and belongs to flammable aromatic hydrocarbons.

Main Applications

As a key aromatic hydrocarbon intermediate, cumene is widely used in petrochemical, fine chemical, pharmaceutical and other industries, with its core applications focusing on the following fields:

The most important application is the production of phenol and acetone — cumene is oxidized to cumene hydroperoxide, which is then decomposed to produce phenol and acetone, accounting for more than 95% of the global phenol production capacity.
Used as a high-boiling point solvent and diluent for coatings, inks, adhesives and resins, with good compatibility with various polymer systems and excellent solubility.
As a raw material for the synthesis of other fine chemicals, such as cumene sulfonate (a surfactant), isopropylbenzene derivatives, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
Used in the blending of high-grade gasoline to improve the octane number and combustion performance of gasoline, and also as a raw material for the production of aviation fuel additives.

Storage and Handling

Store in a sealed, dry, cool and well-ventilated warehouse, away from heat sources, open flames and direct sunlight. The storage temperature should not exceed 30℃, and it should be kept away from strong oxidants, strong acids and strong alkalis to avoid mixed storage and transportation. During handling, anti-static measures should be taken, and protective equipment such as anti-static gloves, goggles and gas masks should be worn to prevent leakage, volatilization and fire.

Safety and Stability

Stable under normal temperature and pressure, no obvious decomposition occurs. It may decompose under high temperature (above 350℃) or strong catalytic conditions, producing small molecular hydrocarbons such as propylene and benzene. It is flammable and explosive when mixed with air, so fire prevention and explosion prevention measures must be taken during storage and use.
