Ceftiofur sodium is a cephalosporin antibiotic for veterinary clinical use and is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It has strong antibacterial effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Ceftiofur acts on transcription peptidase to block the synthesis of mucopeptides, so that the bacterial cell wall is missing to achieve bactericidal effect. Ceftiofur has a stable β-lactam ring, which is not easily destroyed by drug-resistant bacteria, and can act on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria that produce β-lactamase.

Function:

Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. The drug is particularly effective against pathogens such as Pasteurella multocida, Haemophilus somnus, and Escherichia coli. Clinically, it is administered via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, with formulations designed for both immediate and sustained release. In dairy cattle, ceftiofur sodium is used to treat mastitis, while in poultry, it controls E. coli infections. The drug's low withdrawal periods (e.g., 0 days for milk in some jurisdictions) make it favorable for use in food-producing animals. Regulatory agencies (FDA, EMA) mandate rigorous testing for potency, sterility, and impurity profiles to ensure safety and efficacy. Beyond therapeutics, ceftiofur sodium is employed in diagnostic labs for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Resistance, though rare, can occur via β-lactamase production or PBP mutations, necessitating judicious use. Ongoing research explores its potential in combination therapies to extend its clinical utility.
