Ergothioneine (EGT) is a naturally occurring, water-soluble amino acid derivative and a potent antioxidant. It is uniquely synthesized in certain fungi and bacteria, and humans obtain it primarily through dietary sources such as mushrooms (especially porcini, oyster, and shiitake), black beans, and oat bran. Unlike many other antioxidants, ergothioneine has a specific transporter (ETT) in the human body, which facilitates its efficient uptake and accumulation in tissues prone to high levels of oxidative stress, such as the liver, kidneys, bone marrow, and eyes.
