What is Phenylbutazone/Butazolidine ?

Phenylbutazone is a pyrazolone derivative.  It has weak antipyretic and analgesic effect and strong anti-inflammatory effect.  It has a good effect on inflammatory pain and can promote the excretion of uric acid.  White or off white crystalline powder.  Melting point 105.5-106.5 ºC.  It is easily soluble in ace-tone, chloro-form or benzene, almost insoluble in water and soluble in sodium' hydroxide solution.  Odorless, slightly bitter.

Function

Phenylbutazone is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID) effective in treating fever, pain, and inflammation in the body.   As a group, NSAIDs are non-narcotic relievers of mild to moderate pain of many causes, including injury, menstrual cramps, arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.   Since the response to different NSAIDs varies from patient to patient, it is not unusual for a doctor to try a variety of NSAIDs for any given condition.   However, because of a unique risk of bone marrow suppression (causing dangerously low white blood counts), phenylbutazone is generally reserved only for short-term use in selected patients.

2.  It is mainly used to treat rheumatic, rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

Application

Phenylbutazone is the most commonly used NSAID for horses in the United States. It is used for the following purposes:
Analgesia: It is used for pain relief from infections and musculoskeletal disorders, including sprains, overuse injuries, tendinitis, arthralgias, arthritis, and laminitis. Like other NSAIDs, it acts directly on musculoskeletal tissue to control inflammation, thereby reducing secondary inflammatory damage, alleviating pain, and restoring range of motion. It does not cure musculoskeletal ailments or work well on colic pain.
Antipyresis: It is used for reduction of fevers. Its antipyretic qualities may mask other symptoms; therefore, it should not be administered for this purpose unless a veterinarian has concluded the horse would not be able to eat or drink without its use or that the fever might hinder the horse's recovery.
