N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine Ethyl Ester is an esterified derivative of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). Compared with NAC, it demonstrates enhanced cell permeability in isolated perfused rat liver. In isolated human red blood cells, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine Ethyl Ester at a concentration of 1 mM has been reported to prevent the formation of methemoglobin.

In animal studies, administration of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine Ethyl Ester at 50 mg/kg twice daily for two weeks increased glutathione levels in the liver, kidney, heart, testis, and brain of rats. It has also been reported to reduce the increases in plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels induced by paracetamol (acetaminophen) in rats.
