1. Product Overview
Neodymium Oxide, also known as Neodymium(III) Oxide or Neodymium Sesquioxide, is a core functional rare earth oxide with the chemical formula Nd₂O₃ and CAS number 1313-97-9. It appears as pale purple or lavender fine crystalline powder with high purity and uniform particle size. As one of the most widely applied rare earth oxides, it features stable chemical performance, excellent optical and magnetic properties, and ultra-low impurity content. Commercial products are available in 99.9% (3N), 99.99% (4N) and 99.999% (5N) purity grades, covering industrial production, advanced material manufacturing and scientific research scenarios.
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
Neodymium oxide possesses outstanding thermal stability and chemical inertness under normal ambient conditions. It is insoluble in water and ethanol, and can be completely dissolved in strong inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid and nitric acid to form corresponding neodymium salt solutions. The compound has a high melting point and stable high-temperature performance, without easy decomposition or deterioration in conventional high-temperature processing environments.
With a unique hexagonal crystal structure, Nd₂O₃ exhibits distinctive light absorption characteristics, enabling it to effectively adjust and correct glass color. It also has good compatibility with metal and ceramic substrates, which can significantly optimize the mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability of composite materials. Besides, the product is non-hygroscopic and not prone to agglomeration, ensuring stable long-term storage and use.
3. Production Process
Industrial high-purity neodymium oxide is produced through mature rare earth purification and high-temperature calcination processes. Qualified neodymium salt raw materials undergo precipitation, impurity removal, washing and drying, followed by high-temperature calcination and sintering treatment. Strict temperature control and hierarchical purification technology effectively eliminate organic residues, moisture and metal impurities. The final Nd₂O₃ product features high crystallinity, uniform particle distribution and stable batch consistency, fully compliant with international industrial and high-end manufacturing standards.
4. Core Industrial Applications
NdFeB Permanent Magnet Raw Material Neodymium oxide is the fundamental upstream raw material for producing neodymium metal and high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets. High-purity Nd₂O₃ ensures high magnetic energy product and stable magnetic properties of magnet products, which are widely applied in new energy vehicles, wind power generation equipment, precision motors and electronic communication devices.
Glass and Ceramic Coloring Agent Benefiting from its unique optical absorption properties, neodymium oxide is a premium color regulator for special optical glass, art glass and advanced ceramics. It can neutralize iron-induced yellow impurities in glass, present uniform lavender and purple tones, and improve the transparency and ornamental value of glass and ceramic products.
Advanced Alloy Additive Used as a modifying additive for magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys and other lightweight metal alloys. Adding an appropriate amount of Nd₂O₃ can significantly enhance the high-temperature mechanical properties, air tightness and corrosion resistance of alloys, making it an essential auxiliary material for aerospace and high-end equipment manufacturing.
Catalyst and Functional Material Precursor Neodymium oxide serves as an efficient dopant and catalyst precursor for petrochemical cracking, organic synthesis and environmental catalysis. It can also be used to prepare neodymium-doped laser crystals, luminescent materials and ceramic dielectric components, widely used in optoelectronic and laser technology fields.
5. Storage and Handling
Store neodymium oxide in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Avoid long-term exposure to humid air and high-temperature environments to prevent minor surface hydration and powder agglomeration. The product is chemically stable under conventional storage conditions with long service life.
During operation, wear standard protective equipment including dust masks, safety goggles and chemical-resistant gloves. Conduct operation in a ventilated environment to avoid long-term inhalation of dust and direct skin contact. Dispose of waste materials in accordance with local environmental protection regulations.
