Bacteriostatic Water is a type of sterile water that undergoes special treatment and has bacteriostatic agents added. Its core function is to inhibit the growth of microorganisms (such as bacteria) under specific conditions while maintaining a sterile state. It is mainly used to dilute or dissolve drugs (such as polypeptides, hormones, antibiotics, etc.) or as a solvent for small-volume, multiple-use scenarios. The key difference between it and ordinary "sterile water" (Sterile Water for Use) is that it contains bacteriostatic agents, allowing for multiple uses; whereas ordinary sterile water for use does not contain bacteriostatic agents and is limited to single use. The functions of Bacteriostatic Water are entirely centered around "the dilution and safe use of medications," with its core value lying in addressing "the risk of microbial contamination in multiple-use scenarios." Its specific functions can be divided into three categories:

1. Serving as a solvent for diluting/dissolving drugs
Most medications (such as lyophilized powders, concentrated solutions) cannot be used directly and need to be diluted to an appropriate concentration with a specific solvent (e.g., polypeptide drugs, some antibiotics, growth hormones, etc.):
For example, the peptide drugs mentioned earlier, such as Semaglutide and Epithalon, are often stored in lyophilized powder form. When used, they need to be dissolved with bacteriostatic water and then diluted to the clinically required dose;
Unlike ordinary physiological saline (0.9% sodium chloride solution), bacteriostatic water has an osmotic pressure close to that of human body fluids (isotonic) and contains no electrolytes. This does not affect the activity of electrolyte-sensitive drugs (such as some hormonal drugs) and avoids drug precipitation caused by the presence of electrolytes.

2. Inhibiting microbial growth to support multiple uses
This is the core difference between bacteriostatic water and ordinary sterile water:
Ordinary sterile water does not contain bacteriostatic agents. Once opened, bacteria from the air and microorganisms on the hands of operators may enter the bottle and multiply rapidly, so it is limited to single use (even if there is residue, it must be discarded);
Benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water can inhibit bacterial reproduction, keeping the opened medicinal solution in a state of "no excessive microorganisms" within a specified period (such as 28 days), allowing for multiple uses (for example, diabetic patients who use daily can use bacteriostatic water to dilute the drug if needed, reducing the risk of contamination caused by frequent opening).

3. Maintaining drug stability and extending efficacy
Some drugs, after being dissolved or diluted, may degrade if exposed to air for a long time or in the presence of microorganisms (such as polypeptide chain breakage, protein denaturation), leading to reduced efficacy or the production of toxic metabolites:
Bacteriostatic water reduces the "decomposing effect" of microorganisms on drugs by inhibiting microbial growth; at the same time, its purified water matrix can prevent impurities from chemically reacting with drugs, thereby extending the stability time of dissolved drugs (for example, after some antibiotics are diluted, storing them with bacteriostatic water can extend their stability time from 6 hours to 24 hours).
