Overview

Cartalax, also known as AED peptide, T-31 or AC-4, is a synthetic tripeptide bioregulator consisting of the amino acid sequence Ala-Glu-Asp. It has a molecular weight of 333.29 g/mol and the CAS number 45234-02-4. Developed by the research team led by Vladimir Khavinson at the Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in Saint Petersburg, Russia, this compound belongs to the well-documented family of Khavinson bioregulatory peptides. It was initially identified from cartilage tissue extracts and later synthesized artificially.

Mechanism of Action

In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that Cartalax is capable of penetrating cell membranes and entering cell nuclei to bind to the minor groove of DNA, thereby regulating the expression of genes associated with cellular senescence, matrix synthesis and inflammatory responses. Its main biological activities are summarized as follows:
1. Upregulates genes responsible for synthesizing type II collagen and proteoglycans, the key components of cartilage matrix.
2. Inhibits cartilage-degrading enzymes such as MMP-9 to prevent the breakdown of extracellular matrix.
3. Reduces chondrocyte apoptosis and delays cellular senescence.
4. Modulates calcium metabolism via thyroid C cells, which helps maintain bone density.
Research Background & References

Current research on Cartalax is mainly based on cell cultures and animal models. To date, Phase II and Phase III clinical trials on human subjects have not been completed, and the product has not been approved for therapeutic use by the FDA, EMA or other official regulatory authorities. It is strictly limited to research use only.
