Chemical Reactivity

Strong Lewis acid: Electron-deficient boron center readily forms complexes with Lewis bases.
Hydrolysis: Reacts vigorously with water:

BI₃ + 3H₂O → H₃BO₃ + 3HI
Bond cleavage: Cleaves C–O bonds in ethers, esters, alcohols; reductively cleaves sulfonyl/sulfinyl groups.
Thermal stability: Decomposes on heating; reacts incandescently with phosphorus.

Synthesis

Direct combination: B + 3I₂ → BI₃ (209.5°C)
Halogen exchange: BCl₃ + 3HI → BI₃ + 3HCl (high temperature)
Hydride–iodine reaction: 3LiBH₄ + 8I₂ → 3BI₃ + 3LiI + 4H₂ + 4HI

Applications

Organic synthesis: Reagent for deoxygenation, iodination, and C–O bond cleavage.
Catalysis: Lewis acid catalyst in Friedel–Crafts and polymerization reactions.
