  • Description

Glycerin (glycerol) is a reliable and well-established polyol raw material with excellent moisturizing, hygroscopic, and compatibility properties. It is stable, safe, and widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, daily chemical, and industrial sectors. In formulation systems, glycerin effectively improves moisturizing and mouthfeel, enhances product smoothness and stability, and also acts as a solubilizer and viscosity regulator, providing a stable and reliable basic raw material for product development across multiple industries.

    Application areas

    Application Notes

    Food manufacturing industry

Winemaking: Glycerin is used in wine as a taste improver, sweetener, and de-bittering agent. Appropriate addition can enhance the aroma, sweetness, and richness of the wine.

Meat product production: Adding glycerin as a humectant to dried meat, sausages, and cured meat makes the product texture soft and improves the tenderness of the meat.

    Beverage industry

Fruit juices and soft drinks: Glycerin can be used in fruit juices, fruit vinegars and other beverages to quickly break down the bitter and astringent taste in the juices and vinegars, and improve the juice's own richness and aroma, bright appearance and sweet and sour taste.

    Baking industry

Pastries and cakes: Glycerin is used in bread, cakes and other products as a moisture-retaining agent. It has strong hygroscopic properties, maintains a soft texture and increases shelf life.

    Pharmaceutical manufacturing

Glycerin is used in a variety of pharmaceutical formulations, including oral, ophthalmic, parenteral, and topical formulations .

    Daily chemical industry

Moisturizer: Glycerin can draw moisture from the air to hydrate the skin, and it can also lock in the moisture in the skin to prevent moisture loss.

Repairing effects: Glycerin assists in skin healing, reduces the occurrence of related dermatitis, and repairs the skin's normal natural barrier function.

    Toxicity:

The medicinal actions of glycerol are due to osmotic action; orally, 75 ml of glycerol is equivalent to 996 mosmol. Large intravenous doses of glycerol can cause hemolysis, hemoglobinuria, and subsequent renal failure. The osmotic effect of glycerol can lead to tissue dehydration and decreased cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Certain medical conditions such as cardiac, renal, or liver disease and/or diabetes mellitus may be exacerbated by shifts in body water as a result of oral, intravenous, or rectal (suppositories) administration of glycerol. No systemic effects have been reported following the application of large amounts of glycerol to the skin.

    Odorless.

    Air and Water Reactions:

    Hygroscopic. Water soluble.

    Reactivity Profile:

GLYCERINE is incompatible with strong oxidizers. Glycerol is also incompatible with hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, nitric acid + sulfuric acid, perchloric acid + lead oxide, acetic anhydride, aniline + nitrobenzene, Ca(OCl)2, CrO3, F2 + PbO, KMnO4, K2O2, AgClO4 and NaH. A mixture with chlorine explodes if heated to 158-176° F. Glycerol reacts with acetic acid, potassium peroxide, sodium peroxide, hydrochloric acid, (HClO4 + PbO) and Na2O2. Contact with potassium chlorate may be explosive. Glycerol also reacts with ethylene oxide, perchloric acid, nitric acid + hydrofluoric acid and phosphorus triiodide.

    Autoignition Temperature:

    698 °F

    Critical Temperature & Pressure:

    Store at +5°C to +30°C.

    Handling and Storage

    Precautions for safe handling

NO open flames. Handling in a well ventilated place. Wear suitable protective clothing. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Use non-sparking tools. Prevent fire caused by electrostatic discharge steam.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Separated from strong oxidants.Glycerol should preferably be stored at 40 - 60 deg C under nitrogen blanketing. It is not corrosive and presents little risk of ignition because of its high flash point. Highly concentrated glycerol does not corrode steel, but storage tanks of carbon steel must be protected by surface coating to prevent rusting by residual moisture. Glycerol is therefore usually stored in tanks of stainless steel or aluminum.
