Erythrocentaurin

Erythrocentaurin (chemically known as 5-formyl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin) is a natural monoterpene derivative belonging to the dihydroisocoumarin class. Natively found in plants of the Gentianaceae family (such as Centaurium erythraea, Enicostemma littorale, and Swertia species), its primary functions span potent anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) inhibition, anti-diabetic enzyme modulation, and a critical role as a botanical artifact intermediate. 

• Suppression of Viral Markers: Pharmacological metabolomics research highlights erythrocentaurin as a strong anti-HBV compound. In vitro and in vivo models using HepG2.2.15 cells and HBV-transgenic mice demonstrate that it drastically suppresses long-term antiviral indices, including HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBV DNA replication. [1]

When plant extracts interact with ammonia during old-school extraction procedures, secoiridoids like swertiamarin rearrange into gentianine through an erythrocentaurin-related structural framework.
