1. Physical Properties
A colorless, transparent liquid that is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and chloroform. It has moderate volatility and is not flammable.
2. Chemical Properties
(1) Overall Stability: It is inherently quite stable and does not spontaneously decompose at room temperature. However, when exposed to light, moisture, or heavy metals, it slowly decomposes to release highly toxic phosgene; therefore, it must be stored in a sealed container away from light.
(2) Reactivity: Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and chemically active metals; reacts violently with concentrated nitric acid to produce carbon dioxide.
3. Main Applications
(1) Dry Cleaning Industry: Currently the most widely used solvent in the dry cleaning industry, offering outstanding cost-effectiveness.
(2) Industrial Cleaning: Used for degreasing and defatting metal and machined parts; also serves as a cleaning agent for printed circuit boards and a raw material for paint strippers.
(3) Chemical Industry: Used as a raw material and solvent in organic synthesis; employed in the production of fluorocarbon compounds and as an intermediate in various organic synthesis reactions; also serves as an extractant for fats and oils to extract lipid components from natural products.
